Three, two-bedroom hotel style suites in the heart of Newtown.

Built above Joe’s Tavern, Mister Grotto and Osteria Mucca — and adjoining Continental Deli — these three newly completed suites sit within one of Sydney’s most food-rich pockets. Positioned directly over some of the city’s most loved venues, the build places guests quite literally on top of Newtown’s dining culture.

The suites were constructed to feel lived-in rather than formal, balancing generous apartment-style planning with the ease of boutique accommodation. Each includes a private entry and is finished with Jardan furniture, Australian artwork, warm timber detailing and a carefully resolved material palette, delivering a sense of comfort and durability without unnecessary excess.

Located moments from King Street, Camperdown Park and just five kilometres from the CBD, the project provides an ideal base for experiencing Newtown at street level. The suites connect seamlessly with the hospitality offering below, allowing for in-room dining and curated food and wine experiences, while maintaining privacy and separation from the venues beneath.

Forms part of the H. May Precinct project which involved the renovation and refurbishment of three of the four adjoining 2-storey terraces comprising the H. May Building Building, originally constructed in 1911. The ground floor works involved the build of three new restaurants Joe’s Tavern (previously Flora), Mister Grotto and Osteria Mucca surrounding the pre-existing Continental Deli which remained trading throughout. In addition to the new hospitality properties we built three, boutique, hotel-room style apartments, now known as the Australia Street Suites.

Green Anvil were instrumental in establishing and managing the project budget throughout both the design and delivery phases. They consistently tested design ideas against cost and provided clear and timely feedback as the design evolved, enabling informed decision-making at every stage. Their collaborative approach to value management, particularly across joinery, feature lighting and bespoke elements, ensured the integrity of the design was maintained while achieving financial certainty.
