Transforming a 1930’s style bungalow into a cosy family home with architectural details in Coogee.

Beach House centred on a considered reworking of the home’s rear, creating a generous combined living, kitchen and outdoor entertaining zone that opens the house to light, landscape and coastal breezes. The new ground-floor spaces are deliberately calm and robust, designed for daily living and long afternoons spent moving easily between inside and out.

Above, a new upper storey was introduced to accommodate private bedroom and bathroom spaces, carefully integrated to sit comfortably with the existing dwelling rather than overpower it. Material choices and proportions were resolved to ensure the addition feels resolved, restrained and enduring.

At the heart of the home, a custom staircase becomes both connector and centrepiece. Crafted from wrought iron, off-form concrete and sandstone, it rises between old and new, stitching the house together vertically and spatially. More than circulation, the stair is a sculptural architectural feature — grounding the home while providing a tactile, memorable transition between levels.
