Mister Grotto is a compact, high-energy seafood bar tucked into the fabric of Newtown

A 30-seat room that blurs the line between fisherman’s shack and working boat. It’s intimate, fast moving and unapologetically focused on what matters: great produce, honest execution and a sense of theatre that unfolds right in front of you.

The space draws heavily from the rhythms of the sea. Cocktails are playful, the wine list sharp and considered, and the action constant. Oysters are shucked to order, fish is worked at the raw bar, and the charcoal grill anchors the room — turning out familiar seafood classics alongside looser, reworked interpretations. It’s direct, energetic and built to be experienced up close.

Forms part of the H. May Precinct project which involved the renovation and refurbishment of three of the four adjoining 2-storey terraces comprising the H. May Building Building, originally constructed in 1911. The ground floor works involved the build of three new restaurants Joe’s Tavern (previously Flora), Mister Grotto and Osteria Mucca surrounding the pre-existing Continental Deli which remained trading throughout. In addition to the new hospitality properties we built three, boutique, hotel-room style apartments, now known as the Australia Street Suites.

Green Anvil were instrumental in establishing and managing the project budget throughout both the design and delivery phases. They consistently tested design ideas against cost and provided clear and timely feedback as the design evolved, enabling informed decision-making at every stage. Their collaborative approach to value management, particularly across joinery, feature lighting and bespoke elements, ensured the integrity of the design was maintained while achieving financial certainty.
