The design brief was a one-line request – to create a modern, brutalist ‘concrete bunker’.

The Perfect Storm apartment was a highly detailed, one-of-a-kind build defined by bespoke fabrication, custom finishes and a tightly coordinated construction process. The project involved a complete gutting of the existing ground-floor apartment, including demolition of the kitchen, removal of all fixtures, fittings and joinery to the bathroom, and stripping the mezzanine level back to stud. From there, the focus shifted to precision craftsmanship: a custom-fabricated, ‘invisible’ curved plaster cornice was installed to the double-height ceiling to create a seamless transition between walls and ceiling, while hidden storage solutions were integrated throughout. This included restructuring the staircase to conceal under-stair storage behind bespoke joinery. A concrete-style X-Bond render was applied to the bathroom and laundry, complemented by a dual-cantilevered concrete TV unit and a dimmable, neon-look double-string LED ‘Halo’ light. Every element was carefully resolved to balance architectural ambition with buildability.

The apartment was completed with a series of finely detailed custom elements that reinforce its loft-style character. These included the design and construction of a steel shower screen with an arched doorway and concealed magnetic handle, delivering both robustness and visual softness. The dimmable neon-look LED ‘Halo’ lighting was custom fabricated to suit the space, adding warmth and drama without visual clutter. Externally, a cedar battened screen was designed and installed to the courtyard, providing privacy while maintaining a refined, architectural aesthetic. The result is a cohesive, highly crafted apartment where materiality, detail and execution work seamlessly together.

Due to the inherent nature of the project (owner client & builder) we had the ability work collaboratively with Green Anvil throughout the entirety of the documentation & construction phases. This allowed for a fluid process that could evolve & adapt to the differing site constraints, as to ensure the best possible outcome for the design, timings & the budget.

In the end, I think the result speaks for itself, & I couldn’t be happier with the finished product. A deft touch is evident through out & the uncompromising approach taken has achieved a build that has (unsurprisingly) exceeded & surpassed the quality of the majority of my previously built works.
