A modern extension with a balance of old and new.
Silver Back is a confident balance of old and new — a tightly resolved renovation and extension to a semi-detached Marrickville terrace that pairs industrial toughness with unexpected warmth.
The project involved a full refurbishment of the existing home and a bold two-storey rear addition wrapped in corrugated metal, charred timber and zinc. From the laneway, the curved metal form both nods to its surroundings and stands deliberately apart. Inside, that hard exterior gives way to a soft, layered interior: polished concrete underfoot, warm boxwood joinery, engineered timber floors and a sculptural steel spiral stair stitching three levels together.
We navigated complex build challenges, from resolving rising damp in retained masonry to precision-aligning the spiral stair across multiple floors. A retained rear granny flat was carefully reworked to align with the new architecture — delivering a cost-effective compromise without diluting the design intent.
The result is a robust, tactile home that connects seamlessly between old and new, function and form — built to last, and built with intent.
