A sympathetic renovation and extension to a standalone residential bungalow fir for family living.

A considered renovation and rear extension of a 110-year-old Federation home on the Newtown–Stanmore border, Wiltshire House balances heritage character with contemporary living. The original façade and front rooms were carefully restored, while a modern rear addition introduces new kitchen, living, laundry, garage and outdoor entertaining spaces wrapped in charred timber and zinc.

Green Anvil was engaged early and re-appointed following a design change, working closely with engineers to resolve unforeseen subgrade conditions, roof failures and material constraints without compromising programme or heritage fabric. Custom joinery, refined finishes and a seamless transition between old and new define the interior, delivering a high-end, architecturally resolved home for a detail-driven client.

Working alongside Jillian Dinkle and Maryanne Taskovski, Green. ANVIL. delivered a carefully considered three-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Sydney’s Inner West. The project centres on a generous, open-plan kitchen and living space, designed for everyday functionality and long-term liveability. Through close collaboration and disciplined execution, the build balances architectural intent with practical detail, resulting in a refined, well-resolved family home grounded in quality craftsmanship and clarity of build.

It is with pleasure that we write this testimonial for Green Anvil, who we had the great fortune to engage on the renovation/extension of our Federation house in Stanmore.

It’s fair to say we faced our major renovation with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Excited because we were embarking on a dream ten years in the making, fearful because of our desire to respect the heritage and character of the home that we loved. Needless to say, it was important to both of us to find a builder who not only understood and shared this desire, but who also had the capability to execute.

We remember the first question Green Anvil asked. ‘What would we consider the most critical points of the construction process’. A simple question, but it says everything about Green Anvil’s approach – for Sam and his team, it’s not just about the act of construction, but how they best bring their collective experience, genuine love of their craft and creativity to delivering their client’s vision and brief.

This care factor, their ability to bring value to the project well beyond just form and function, and the reassurance of a team who have ‘been there done that’, were emblematic of Green Anvil throughout the build.

Perhaps even more impressive was their ability to deal with the unexpected – working solutions to surprises that our 110 plus year home would throw their way, bringing to life the challenging ‘creativity’ of our interior designer, and somehow project managing the disruption of a global pandemic.

In the end, nothing speaks more to Green Anvil’s capability than the results.

As we sit in our ‘forever’ home, the exquisite materials, the structural and aesthetic details, and the harmony of the ‘new’ with the heritage, form and feel of our existing home, is testament to the craftsmanship of Sam and his team.

We couldn’t recommend Green Anvil more highly and would be more than happy to speak to our positive experience in person.
